When Eboni arrived at the BORA Rescue Centre in April 2022, she was scared, stressed–and with a black-stained mouth from chewing on rubber in a village plantation. She was only three years old and alone, spotted by a local farmer after wandering into a village in search of food and safety.
Eboni’s Journey: From Frightened Newcomer to Jungle School Star
It took time and patience for our team to gain Eboni’s trust, but their gentle care paid off. Now, Eboni is thriving at Jungle School! She’s become an adventurous climber–reaching heights of up to 20 metres! She is also showing real skill in foraging for forest foods like fruit, leaves, and bark. She’s often seen relaxing in the treetops, enjoying her jungle surroundings.
Eboni has also made a few special friends–Ruby, Pansy and Arto–and she loves to play and wrestle with them. She has a cheeky streak, and the keepers need to be wary of her pulling their clothes and stealing hoses when they are cleaning her enclosure.
Eboni loves food and will often steal food from others. To ensure all the orangutans receive their fair share, Eboni is fed in her own enclosure. Her favourite foods to feast on are bananas, dragon fruit, and corn. Eboni loves to swing on ropes and build leafy nests in her enclosure after eating.
We’re pleased to report that Eboni is healthy and full of energy. While a few others at the centre have had minor illnesses recently, she’s remained strong and well. And her recent weight gain to 16.9 kg shows she’s thriving.
Eboni has come a long way from that frightened young orangutan lost in the rubber plantation. But thanks to your support, she’s on the path toward a brighter, wilder future.
Thank you so much for being part of Eboni’s journey to freedom 🧡
